Hiring an Identity Theft Company

As if credit cards theft is not a big enough problem, we now have to worry about protecting the identity of unsuspecting children as well. This new trend among criminals is even more problematic because of the potential it may be years before the average person discovers what happened. There are controls we can put in place to at least limit the amount of damage it can cause.

Be on the Lookout for Child ID Theft

As parents in the 21st century we not only have to worry about our own identities being stolen but those of our children as well. Thieves have become smarter and are now looking toward the children because they know it may be years before anyone discovers anything is amiss. In order to prevent this from happening to your child, you want to do the following on a regular basis:

·         Review your child’s credit report on a regular basis
·         Protect your child’s personal information and stress to your child(ren) the importance of taking this precaution as well
·         Never provide your child’s social security number to anyone without knowing that person has a valid reason for needing it
·         Only take your child’s social security card with you when you need it—other times leave it at home under lock and key

Failure to follow the above steps can be detrimental for your child because the theft will not become known until a number of years later when it is too late for you to even begin to locate the thief and press charges. Reducing the Cases of Identity Theft Involving Children

Child identity theft is a growing problem, and each of us as parents has to do our part to put an end to it. Think it can’t happen to your child? Think again! During the course of my professional career I have come across at least three people who have found out their children were victims of this crime.

Fortunately they caught it before it was too late—they either read articles or saw commercials that brought up the subject of identity theft of children and decided to find out if their children were victims though not really believing they were. Now they are spokes persons talking to people in their neighborhoods about preventing this from happening to other children.

Hiring a Third Party to Protect Your Children

Hiring an identity theft company is not a necessity if you take precautions to protect your children, but it can certainly provide additional protection. If you choose to hire a company make sure you choose one that will alert you when anything is not right—you may even want to request the credit reporting agencies to notify you if anyone tries to place something in your child’s report.
