Keep Your Kids Safe from Id Theft

I have to say that I never saw this coming. I feel so bad for my neighbor Steve’s son Jeffrey. Jeff had been a happy little boy growing up in our quiet suburb of east PA. As he grew it was apparent he was a gifted child and his scores in school were well known and admired amongst his peers and professors. He won several scholarly awards and got a scholarship to a great university. However, one day after his freshman year, he went to apply for his first credit card and a chance to start taking on even more adult responsibilities, and was flat out rejected because of a bad credit score. How could this have happened?

  • Identity theft is perhaps the fastest growing crime in the U.S.
  • Identity Thieves will target you the more you use identification tied to credits and electronic transfers. Especially if you do your banking and billing online.
  • Children are increasingly becoming the targets of criminal social security identity theft because criminals can get away with it for years before being discovered.

It turns out that someone connected to a criminal organization had stolen his social security number years ago. In that time period they had opened lines of credit under his assumed identity, and spent a lot of money, intercepting the bills or having them sent to other P.O. boxes. These criminals didn’t bother keeping up with payments, but did find a way to spend thousands. By the time poor Jeff and his family found out what was going on it was too late. No amount of gifted smarts could change the devastation this has caused for his life of limitless potential. Now things were going to be a lot harder.

Id Theft Happens Anywhere, Anytime

This crime is happening all over the world, but especially here in the United States. More and more people are not paying for things with cash, and credit card and social security numbers are relatively easy to steal. All someone needs to do is write this number down in order to find ways to use it. Think about how easy it is to input a number into an online website to make purchases. If you don’t keep track of your information it might very well fall into the wrong hands.

Business Id Theft

Business id theft is also increasingly becoming a problem. Employees who have access to, but don’t protect your small business passwords, account information and other sensitive information can be liabilities. A mistake or malicious action on their part can ruin your business.

Above all, if you are a parent don’t let your family become a victim to child id theft. Children identity theft will have lasting and devastating effects so be vigilant of your children’s secure information. For Jeff it is uncertain how long it will be before he’s out of the woods. He’s been presented with a difficult road to navigate.

To Steal a Childs ID

I live in the city by myself, and have a family living next door to me who's son I often baby sit for when they need a few hours out in the evening on occasion. I adore the little guy and though I never wanted children of my own, I have to say I enjoy sitting down and helping him with his homework or watching a ball game. He's just around the age where he will be going to high school in a year or so, and the world will continue to get bigger with cell phones, cars, girls, and yes credit cards. When you talk to kids about the economy and credit crisis this, or debt crisis that, their eyes glaze over. He openly dreads if I flip to CNN during a break from the game, so I don't spend too much time talking about the "real" world with him. I'll leave that up to his parents. But recently some scary stuff happened to him involving things previously mentioned. How might a child be at risk of being in a debt crisis before they've even owned a credit card? I heard the couple arguing over something to this nature one afternoon while their son was at school and shamefully eavesdropped for a moment. Apparently someone had opened up a credit account under his name and recklessly made purchases for all kinds of things under his name racking up an enormous bill in a very short time. This is considered identity theft children  If it continued he would be in danger of having a ruined credit score and a mountain of debt before he even became a legal adult. As the levels of their voices grew in anger I slipped off into my apartment and sat at my computer to look up why and how this criminal id theft happened.

Why would anyone want to attempt child ID theft? Surprisingly I discovered that children are 51 times more likely to be a victim of this type of crime than adults. Children are always targets for a variety of crimes and obtaining a child's social security number is all a thief needs to create a new identity for them self. One reason children are attractive in this type of crime is because a thief often can get away with the ID theft for years without being noticed. People don't start worrying about a credit rating till they are young adults or older, so sometimes a crime can go unnoticed for a decade or more. All of this could have a terrible effect on a child's future employment, ability to secure loans, and criminal history! I learned much of this information through a site called legal-yogi.com. They have experts that are ready to help once you reach out and contact them. From what I learned I went next door and advised my neighbors that if this happens to you, you should:

- Cancel all accounts that are affected and relay this possibility to the issuer of the accounts
- Call the police and file a report. Be specific about any details and things that seem of suspicious nature
- Contact the three credit reporting agencies which are Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax
- Reach out to the Federal Trade commission or the Identity Theft Clearinghouse to file a complaint

Hiring an Identity Theft Company

As if credit cards theft is not a big enough problem, we now have to worry about protecting the identity of unsuspecting children as well. This new trend among criminals is even more problematic because of the potential it may be years before the average person discovers what happened. There are controls we can put in place to at least limit the amount of damage it can cause.

Be on the Lookout for Child ID Theft

As parents in the 21st century we not only have to worry about our own identities being stolen but those of our children as well. Thieves have become smarter and are now looking toward the children because they know it may be years before anyone discovers anything is amiss. In order to prevent this from happening to your child, you want to do the following on a regular basis:

·         Review your child’s credit report on a regular basis
·         Protect your child’s personal information and stress to your child(ren) the importance of taking this precaution as well
·         Never provide your child’s social security number to anyone without knowing that person has a valid reason for needing it
·         Only take your child’s social security card with you when you need it—other times leave it at home under lock and key

Failure to follow the above steps can be detrimental for your child because the theft will not become known until a number of years later when it is too late for you to even begin to locate the thief and press charges. For more information on protecting your children from identity theft see our website at Legal-Yogi.com.

Reducing the Cases of Identity Theft Involving Children

Child identity theft is a growing problem, and each of us as parents has to do our part to put an end to it. Think it can’t happen to your child? Think again! During the course of my professional career I have come across at least three people who have found out their children were victims of this crime.

Fortunately they caught it before it was too late—they either read articles or saw commercials that brought up the subject of identity theft of children and decided to find out if their children were victims though not really believing they were. Now they are spokes persons talking to people in their neighborhoods about preventing this from happening to other children.

Hiring a Third Party to Protect Your Children

Hiring an identity theft company is not a necessity if you take precautions to protect your children, but it can certainly provide additional protection. If you choose to hire a company make sure you choose one that will alert you when anything is not right—you may even want to request the credit reporting agencies to notify you if anyone tries to place something in your child’s report.

Being Able to Stop Identity Theft Quickly

Have you ever thought about what would happen if someone stole your child’s identity? Identity theft of children is a growing problem, and it will get worse unless parents take the initiative to protect their children from this crime. It’s more difficult to detect than other types of identity theft because it sometimes takes years to discover—the criminals depend on this! Don’t let your child be one of the victims!

Theft of a Social Security Number

When someone gets hold of your social security number they can do just about anything financially with it. Social security number ID theft is the predecessor of all other types of identity theft because criminals need this information to commit other types of identity theft including criminal identity theft. What can a criminal do when he or she has your social security number? Some of the possibilities include the following:
  • Obtain credit in your name
  • Get a job with your credentials (this will give them access to your employment and educational records)
  • If you’re already retired they can collect your social security pension
  • Get a driver’s license
  • Apply for a duplicate social security card
  • Apply for government benefits such as student loans, food stamps, public assistance and much more
For more information on what criminals can do with your social security number visit our website at Legal-Yogi .

Credit Cards: Another Problem Area

Identity theft criminals love the idea of credit cards fraud. It is often quite easy because of the card issuers that either mail unsolicited cards or pre-approved applications that the consumer only has to sign and return. They don’t have the consumer’s signature, so all the criminal has to do is sign the form and send it back with a change of address. Some card issuers did get a little tighter on this and would not honor pre-approved applications with a change of address. The criminal can still get by with it—my neighbor got stung like that because all the criminal did was keep an eye on her mailbox (she was gone all day working) and take the card when it arrived. He was then able to activate the card and change the address so my neighbor didn’t know anything about it. Needless to say she learned quickly how to install a lock on her mailbox!

Put an End to Identity Theft

While it’s impossible to stop identity theft completely, each individual can take the necessary precautions to protect himself which in turn will at least reduce the number of crimes that occur. When the criminals learn people are going to be more protective and will report the crimes, they will move on to an easier target.

Filing a Social Security Theft Report

Identity theft continues to rise, and the latest trend is even more alarming: child ID theft. These crimes are even more difficult to solve because it sometimes takes years before anyone discovers them. It’s important to take steps early in your child’s life in order to ensure he or she doesn’t become a victim before even graduating from high school.

Identity Theft Criminals now Target Children

The newest trend in identity theft is one that will be even more difficult to solve unless we take measure immediately. Children and identity theft are the new targets of these criminals, and they love this group because it is often years before anyone any discovers a discrepancy. The problem is by the time anyone notices, the criminal is long gone, and the victim is left on his own trying to prove the information is fraudulent since it occurred before he turned eighteen. Have you ever looked at a discouraged teen that can’t get a loan for college because of information he or she didn’t know was on the credit history? I’ve seen those sad looks, and you’re at a loss to tell the child what to do: saying it will all work out doesn’t work. Some of the things you can do to ensure the protection of your children’s identities include the following:
  • Review your children’s credit reports on a routine basis
  • Do not carry any social security cards with you unless you are going to need them for a particular trip
  • When your children are old enough to understand discourage them from giving out personal information too freely
  • Avoid giving out the social security numbers of your children unless you know the person asking actually needs it (insurance, schools, doctors, etc.)
Reporting Theft of a Social Security Card

A social security theft report is an essential part of controlling the problem with identity theft. The longer people allow the problem to continue without reporting it, the longer it will continue. Remember: when you don’t report this crime it sends out the message that you don’t care about your identity and personal information. This will encourage the criminals to continue committing the crime assuming you will allow them to continue getting by with it. On the other hand when you take the time to report every incident that involves theft and misuse of your personal information the thieves will eventually realize you are not someone who will tolerate their illegal actions.

How to Fight the Growing Problem

How do we fight identity theft? The only real way to fight this problem is for everyone to be very careful to whom they provide their personal information. It is also essential to follow up on every possible questionable transaction on your credit card or bank statement. Make it a point to keep an eye on your credit report so you know if there is anything questionable. Finally and most importantly be willing to prosecute the criminals if an investigation reveals their identity. If everyone was consistent in doing these things we could get better control of the problem and possibly eventually put an end to it.You can find out more information about child identity theft by visiting our website at Legal-Yogi .

Child ID Theft: Protect Your Child

When I became a mother, I knew a fierce, protective love that I never dreamed even existed.  I wanted my son to have every advantage he needed to have a happy and secure life.  I never dreamed that something as seemingly innocuous as taking out a term life insurance policy for him would lead to child ID theft and put his future at risk.

Of course, I knew about things such as financial and internet identity theft.  I even knew someone who found out they had been a victim of social security identity theft when they were audited by the IRS for failing to report part of their income, and it turned out to be income reported by someone else under their social security number.  It just never occurred to me that a child could be at risk.  Here are some things I learned about child identity theft that will help you protect your child’s identity.

·         Why would someone want to steal a child’s identity?
·         How does Child Identity theft take place?
·         How you can safeguard your child’s identity?

Why would someone want to steal a child’s identity?

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the US.  Though I was very careful to protect my personal information, I never had a clue that my child was at risk for this crime as well.  Child identity theft protection is as important as protecting your own identity.  The thing that thieves find so attractive about the identity of a child is that it is the perfect identity tabula rasa—a blank slate.  It gives the thief a fresh start.  With just a little information such as date of birth, social security number, and name it is possible to create a credit profile from scratch, and run up purchases for which you never have to be truly responsible. Perhaps the most attractive part is there is very little chance of discovery until the child becomes working age and gets a job and starts attempting to establish credit of his or her own.

How does Child Identity theft take place?

Sadly, most cases of identity theft are perpetrated by someone close to the child such as a friend or relative, but it really is a simple matter to obtain the necessary information anyplace such records are kept such as pediatrician offices or any place you share your child’s information such as savings accounts or insurance companies.  Some of the very things you do to insure your child’s future can put him at risk for identity theft.

How you can safeguard your child’s identity?

Child identity theft protection is not as difficult as you might think.  Basically do the same things you would to safeguard your own identity by not sharing personal information, safely storing ID cards when you are not using them, and taking advantage of identity protection services such as those available at Legal-yogi.  You can begin by filling out the no-obligation forms provided on their website to get all the information you need to decide if their services are right for you, and get the ball rolling to insure that your child’s identity and future is protected 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

An Identity Theft Protection Company can Help Protect Your Identity

In years gone by, the one thing you could count on was your own identity.  You might have an identity crisis along the way, but in the end, you alone were accountable for your own actions.  In this modern age, identities are stolen every day.  In fact, identity theft has become one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation—often with devastating effects on innocent people.  If you think you could be a victim of identity theft, or just want to learn more about it, here are some tips for identity theft protection that should interest you:

·         What is Identity Theft?
·         How do I Prevent Identity Theft?
·         What is Identity Theft Protection and Restoration?

What is Identity Theft?

1.        Financial ID Theft: Theft of personal information such as bank or credit card info for the purpose of personal gain.

2.       Medical ID Theft: Stealing someone’s identity to get medical care.  This is particularly dangerous if someone establishes information in a medical data base under your name, because it can impact the treatment you receive in emergency situations (think blood type or allergy info).

3.       Criminal ID theft: someone is arrested under your name for a crime you did not commit.

4.       Identity Card Theft: Use of your ID in order to get credit cards, Social Security Numbers or cards, Etc, in your name.

5.       Social Security ID Theft: Using someone else’s social security card to report earnings in your name and avoid paying taxes on income or to collect benefits to which they are not entitled.

6.       Synthetic ID theft: Using various bits of information from different people to create a composite as a totally new person.

7.       Child Identity Theft: Theft of the social security number of a child for the purpose of establishing and getting new credit.  This is most often committed by a close friend or relative of the child, so child identity theft protection is more important than ever.

How do I Prevent Identity Theft?

You prevent identity theft by guarding your personal information.  Do not share your private information over the phone with anyone who contacts you.  Make sure your mail is secure.  Carry only personal info you need when you need it…leave the rest locked up at home.  Guard PINs and passwords. Shred papers that have identification numbers or account numbers.  Remove yourself from public directories such as whitepages.com. Install firewalls on your computer. Keep confidential info out of email. Keep an eye on your credit report and report any inconsistencies immediately.
